Overview of Jiu-Jitsu Gi Sizes: Finding Your Ideal Fit

A gi is the standard robe-and-pants uniform worn for Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ). The optimal fit allows you to move with ease as you grapple but is not so loose that it becomes a deterrent.

Focusing on structure, comfort, and quality are the main priorities when choosing the gi that will support your range of motion and aid in your performance.

To help you navigate jiu-jitsu gi sizes and find your ideal fit, we’re sharing how to take measurements and the defining factors that set Hayabusa gis apart.

Understanding Jiu Jitsu Gi Sizes

The jiu-jitsu gi size chart differs from the typically recognized measurement guide used for clothing. BJJ gi sizing ranges from A0-A6, with each letter size corresponding to a person’s height and weight.

The letter stands for who the gi is for – A is for Adult and Y is for Youth, and the numbering increases as the size gets bigger. There’s no differentiation between women’s gi sizing and men’s, as it is based on each individual’s unique measurements.

Following this system is crucial to ensure your ultimate fit in both the jacket and pants. However, each brand may have slightly adjusted jiu-jitsu gi sizes, so follow instructions accordingly to achieve accurate measurements.

How to Measure for a Gi, Top to Bottom

Since the gi is a set, you’ll need to take measurements for both the upper and lower body. Here is how to measure for a gi to match with the corresponding sizes on the chart:

Chest - Measure around the chest beneath the armpits, across the nipples, and ensure the measuring tape stays level all the way around.

Waist - Start four fingers beneath your belly button for an accurate measurement of your waistline, also keeping the tape level all the way around.

Arm Length - Begin at the top edge of your shoulder and measure down to the elbow. Then, continue measuring to the wrist just below the wrist bone.

Thigh - Wrap the measuring tape near the highest point of the thigh, right beneath the crotch, once again keeping the tape level all the way around.

Leg Length - Start at the point on your side that corresponds with the waist and measure down to the floor.

In addition to height and weight measurements, you’ll want to take into account different body types. Once you’ve measured your size, make sure it still fits well.

The jacket should be long enough to reach the thighs, with the sleeves long enough to reach the wrists. The pants should reach the ankles but shouldn’t skim the floor.

Move around in the material and see how comfortable it feels. If it restricts your range of motion or feels too tight, you may need to go up a size.

Generally, a looser fit is common for those who are training, but competitions have specific gi fit requirements to keep in mind when selecting your gi size.

The comfortable feel and streamlined design allow fighters to move with ease while aiding their power and performance whenever they hit the mat.

Hayabusa Essential Gold Weave Jiu-Jitsu Gi

The heavyweight power of the Essential Gold Weave Jiu-Jitsu Gi is aptly named as it's the gold standard of jiu-jitsu uniforms. Though technically the “gold” refers to the combination of lightweight single weave with the strength of double weave, it stands in a class of its own.

The ultra-robust construction and ripstop material allow fighters to grapple and compete with confidence. Despite the heftiness, the refined design, complete with Hayabusa’s signature logo, provides an unrestrictive fit and sleek aesthetic.

Buying the Essential Gold Weave Jiu-Jitsu Gi involves understanding BJJ gi sizing.
